As the students have started to get to know each other better, and converse even more, a great discussion came up in the block center the other day. Student N said, "I have an idea, let's make this Manhatten." I continued to listen and then heard another student say, "Yes, lets make Queens." As I continued to observe the students I decided to step in and asked them, " what about the rest of NYC?" Ipulled out a map and then watched as they created even more with the blocks. They then started to think about places within each borough.
As the students discussed as a class after, they want to continue to work on this, but add more. One student C said,"I have an idea, let's build different landmark buildings and then hang them from the ceiling." The other students really liked that idea and are really interested in doing more. We will continue to study buildings and other skyscrapers around nyc as we observe the building across the street on Tuesday. I look forward to see where this learning takes us and what will come out of the project.
