pattern books, and retelling

In reading students have been working on retelling the story across their fingers. They are focusing on using the words first, then, next, next, last,   first then next after last, and also first then next after finally. The words are interchangable. The students also have been using 1, 2,3,4, and 5. They traced their hands so that they have a copy in their book baggies for independent reading. Some of the students even made a copy to take home and help them!

In writing today students looked through pattern books to see if they were able to identify any patterns. They will be using these in there take home books and in their daily reading. At home you can have them tell you the pattern they identified and also ask them to tell you what a pattern is, and if they are able to recognize them not only in books but also in the environment.
